{Sunday morning...}

can be the best time of the week. You can relax, enjoy some brunch (maybe a little champagne), and, if you choose, get a lot of things you've been wanting to do done.

This morning my mom, dad, and I had Eggs Benedict (Mom makes the best hollandaise, seriously), and finished up a Waldorf cake we had baked last night while watching football games.

The finished result.

Waldorf Cake
1/2 cup of Crisco (mind you, this is an old recipe)
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs

Cream together in large bowl.

1 bottle red food coloring (individually sold size)
2 T. cocoa powder
1 cup buttermilk
1 t. salt
2 cups flour (all-purpose) minus 1 t.

Make paste of red food coloring and 1 bottle of water + cocoa. Add buttermilk and salt.

Add flour and buttermilk (red) mixture alternately to creamed sugar. (3 turns each) Add 1 t. of vanilla.

In a separate bowl, blend together 1 t. soda and 1 t. vinegar. Stir into cake batter by hand only until blended. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes or until cake tester comes out clean!

For the frosting...

Cook until thick over low heat stirring constantly:
1 cup milk (I used whole milk)
4 T. flour

Cream until fluffy:
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup butter (room temperature)
1/2 cup Crisco

Add 1 t. vanilla and cooled milk/flour mixture and beat on medium speed until smooth.

I have a recipe similar to this that is also very old! I make it every year for New Years. It's so yummy!
